What this tool does to your photo
A square is a shape plenty of feeds and profile slots still insist on, and the one most often reached by sacrifice. Crop a tall photograph to 1:1 and you lose a third of its height, which is usually somebody's legs or somebody's hair. This page does the opposite: the long edge stays exactly as long as it was, and the short edge grows to meet it.
Because the target is only ever as big as the dimension you already have, a square asks less of the fill than any other conversion here. On a phone portrait it builds two bands of a few hundred pixels each rather than two thirds of the frame, and a mirror across that distance is short enough to read as texture rather than as a reflection — which is why this route opens on one.
What happens, and in what order
The seam softening slider is the control worth understanding on this page. A mirrored edge has no jump in colour at the join, but it does have a sudden change in direction: everything that was travelling one way is now travelling the other, and the eye finds that kink immediately. The slider blurs a narrow band across the join and fades it out both ways, so the direction changes gradually instead of instantly.
It does not touch your photograph. The band is softened, then your picture is drawn back over the top at full sharpness, so the effect lands entirely on the side of the join that was invented. Sixteen pixels is the starting point here; above about forty the softening starts to be visible as softening, which is its own kind of tell.
The awkward questions
- Why does a square ask for so much less new material than 16:9?
- Because a square only has to match your photograph's long edge, and every other shape has to beat it. A 1080 by 1920 photo becomes 1,920 by 1,920 — the long edge is already there, so the tool adds 840 pixels of width and stops. Forty-four percent of the finished frame is built, against sixty-eight for 16:9. That is the practical reason a square is the gentlest conversion on this site.
- Can I make a square with a plain white border instead of a fill?
- Yes, and it is a common reason to be here. Choose One colour and the white swatch, and the picture sits centred on a white square with even bands on two sides. If you want white on all four sides rather than two, switch the target from Shape to Margins, where the four edges are yours to set independently.
- The mirror looks seamless on my photo. Is that suspicious?
- Not at all, it is what a mirror is for. The reflected strip meets your photograph with no jump in colour, because one is literally the other read backwards, so on textures with no strong direction — sand, water, grass, a knitted jumper — the join genuinely disappears. What gives a mirror away is repetition and symmetry, which show up on anything with recognisable objects in it. Look for a doubled face or a suspiciously balanced horizon and you will know within a second.
